STAMNESS BOATHOUSE

Obsolete structure with a new use

The boathouse, constructed in the 60s, was a common sight on many Minnesota lakes. It was equipped with a light rail track and an electric winch to pull boats into the lower level, as covered boat lifts off a dock were not available then. As most lake shore agencies have strict rules regarding alterations to the original structure, we were limited in our modifications. The owners had built a year-round home 18 years ago and chose not to modify the boathouse at that point. The new boathouse design retains the existing concrete block foundation but rebuilds the upper portion to create a small gathering area and a future sauna. The new design incorporates a new palette of exposed wood structure, operable windows, and wood cladding panels to complement the house..
