UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON COMPUTER SCIENCE AUDITORIUM

Updating accessibility, technology, and atmosphere.

The renovation of the UW-Madison Computer Science Auditorium was made possible by the generous support of local alumna Judy Faulkner, who founded Epic Systems Corporation in Verona, Wisconsin. Epic is a global leader in digital health and data records. Ms. Faulkner requested our assistance in modernizing this lecture room as a gift to the university.

The previous classroom was cold and institutional, lacking adequate technology, lighting, acoustics, and proper accessibility. The aesthetics were outdated, making it unwelcome, and the desks and chairs were both uncomfortable and unattractive.

Despite facing a tight budget and working within the constraints of concrete floors, ceilings, and walls, we collaborated with university staff to develop a warm and inviting space that was both flexible and functional. Our first challenge was to add an accessible ramp within an existing corridor to ensure access to the upper lecture room.

Next, we focused on enhancing the room’s functionality. This included adding adjustable indirect and direct lighting, improving acoustics, upgrading audio-visual equipment, and providing power sources for students. Finally, to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere, we incorporated light, wooden walls and clad the existing concrete beams with wood panels.
