MOORHEAD HIGH SCHOOL
Building upon the past
Built on the site of the existing high school, the new school for 2,600 students sets a direction for the future of education in Moorhead. The first phase, which is under construction now, is made up of neighborhood wings for education. Once the first phase is completed and the class functions migrated into it from the old school, the previous structure will be taken down and the new theater and music wings built as phase two.
The different approach to education focuses on learning communities inside of the neighborhood wings, giving students a place to spend most of their day rather than walking from class to class. The students will stay where they are and teachers will move from room to room. This new way of education is nowhere more exemplified than in the central commons, a three-story high atrium with floor to ceiling glass and a large learning stair. The expanse of light and space contrast with the previous school built in 1967.
